Two General types of the temperate zone, Chlorociboria aeruginascens and Chlorociboria, Escherichia coli, can only be reliably distinguished under the microscope. Chlorociboria Egido has larger spores 9-15 µm × 1.5–2.5 µm and vermiform cells on the external surface is uneven, in contrast to the commoner C. aeruginascens from which spores 6-10 µm × 1.5–2 µm.

Hyphae and fruiting bodies of all types to make xylindein, a secondary metabolite, a substrate which stains wood blue-green, with "green oak" to be a valuable commodity in woodworking. Blue-green painted wood is featured in "Tunbridge wares".
