The school was built by the Works Progress Administration. It opened for classes in 1936 and was dedicated by Eleanor Roosevelt. It was originally to be named for Franklin D. Roosevelt.

The school is located on U.S. route 25 / route 42 Dixie. The main building is nearly identical in design and materials for high school Simon Kenton located in independence, Kentucky. Before renovations as a school Dixie heights high school Simon Kenton, they were known as sister schools.

Former superintendent Tim Hanner started a program called Hanners heroes. It trains students as Tutors in one to one reading program, who can I get to help elementary students learn to read.
