It feeds mainly on the mosquito species Anopheles gambiae, a major vector of malaria in the region.

This is one of only two known animals that choose their prey based on what last ate, along with Cratena Peregrina. Although jumping spiders are known to rely on their excellent vision, it was shown that this species selects blood-filled mosquitos more often than unfed, even more so when only relying on smell 90%, compared with 83%: when its time to make a choice based on smell alone, with two, hidden from view, around 90% of E. culicivora chose blood-filled mosquito. However, it seems that the choice for the preferred pose of rest, as different types of mosquitoes to sit in different angles. This has been shown with 3D-animations of different resting postures.

In 2009, it was found that feeding on blood-filled mosquitos changes the smell of E. culicivora, leading specimens to find potential partners more attractive after-meal blood
