ⓘ Leukocyte esterase

Leukocyte esterase is an esterase produced by leukocytes. A leukocyte esterase test is a urine test for the presence of white blood cells and other abnormalities associated with infection.

Leukocytes in urine could theoretically indicate a urinary tract infection UTI. A positive test can be clinically significant in the right context. Le test is also used to screen for gonorrhea and for amniotic fluid infections. The combination of the Le test with urine nitrite test provides an excellent screen for establishing the presence of UTI. Test strip urine test strip can screen for both. If a urine sample that tests positive for both nitrite and leukocyte esterase to be cultured for pathogenic bacteria.

"It is assumed that reagent strips leukocyte esterase testing device Combur test UX urine can be a useful tool to diagnose spontaneous bacterial peritonitis SBP". Braga et al. concluded that the Combur test UX urine screening is a very sensitive and specific method for diagnosing SBP in the ascitic fluid of patients with cirrhosis who underwent paracentesis".
