West Virginia voters chose 6 electors to the Electoral College, which selected the president and vice president of the United States.

West Virginia defeated the incumbent United States President Ronald Reagan in California who was running against former Vice President Walter Mondale of Minnesota. Reagan ran a second time with the current Vice President and former CIA Director George Bush from Texas, and Mondale ran with representative Geraldine Ferraro from new York, the first major female candidate for Vice-President.
