Scheduled monuments are defined in the ancient monuments and archaeological areas act 1979 and the 1983 law On National heritage. They are also known as scheduled ancient monuments. There are about 18.300 planned elements of the monument list, which is maintained by English heritage, more than one site may be included in one entry.

While a scheduled monument can also be found in a listed building, English heritage considers that the status of a monument of architecture as the best way of protecting buildings than the scheduled status of a monument. If the monument is an English heritage "no longer planning merits" it may be descheduled.
