History of Cherkasy Oblast

The History of Cherkasy Oblast of central Ukraine has a long history spanning all the way back to Pre-historic times. Archaeological discoveries, have shown that people have inhabited the valley of the Dnieper River since the times immemorial. The oldest objects excavated on the territory of the region date back to the Stone Age – the Palaeolithic period.

Uman Regiment

The Uman Regiment was one of the seventeen territorial-administrative subdivisions of the Hetman State. But after the division of the Hetman State the regiment became part of the Right-bank Ukraine. The Regiment consisted of 10 sotnias. The regiments capital was the city of Uman, now in Cherkasy Oblast of central Ukraine. The regiment was founded in 1648 at the beginning of the Khmelnytsky uprising. When the crash happened, the regiment was placed under the control of right-Bank Ukraine hetmans.
