Incumbent democratic Mazie Hirono, who represented the 2nd quarter in 2007 ran for the U.S. Senate.

Tulsi Gabbard, then a city Councilwoman in Honolulu, sought and received the Democratic nomination to succeed Hirono. She defeated Rafael del Castillo, a lawyer, a Mufi Hannemann, former mayor of Honolulu, Esther Kiaaina, chief advocate for the office of Hawaiian Affairs, Bob Marx, a lawyer, and Miles shiratori, a financial Advisor in the Democratic primary.

Kawika Crowley, a handyman, requested and received from the Republicans. He defeated Matt DiGeronimo, businessman and former naval officer, in the Republican primaries.
