This species was described by Zehtindjiev et al.

This species shows a marked preference its stages blood of immature erythrocytes including erythroblasts. Uniquely for Avian malaria species development and maturation of gametocytes occurs in immature red blood cells. Also unique the fields of the nuclei in the blood stages noticeably smooth and clear.

It seems that morphologically belongs to the subgenus Huffia, but it is yet to be determined.
