ⓘ USS Julia Hamilton (SP-1460)

Julia Hamilton was a Maryland State Oyster Police Force schooner, part of the force established to enforce state conservation laws designed to protect Marylands oyster resources when out of state, often New England, dredgers began destroying reefs in the Chesapeake Bay. Later local opposition to licenses turned to open "warfare" in the "oyster wars" when a fleet of state vessels fought "oyster pirates" in armed conflicts.

This force became the Maryland state fishery force in the conservation Commission of Maryland, with which the schooner morning when all the power boats and men, joined the Naval reserve in the agreement between the state and Navy in 1917. Julia Hamilton continues to patrol the normal water, the application of the conservation law and Federal law in accordance with the contract. After the war the government had modernized its old sailing ships must be replaced by specially constructed motor boats. This force was one of the elements that form today the Department of natural resources of Maryland.
