ⓘ 1970 United States Senate election in New York

The 1970 United States Senate election in New York was held on November 3, 1970. Incumbent Republican U.S. Senator Charles Goodell, who had been appointed to the seat by Governor Nelson Rockefeller in 1968 following the assassination of Sen. Robert F. Kennedy, sought a full term. Goodell was challenged by Democrat Richard Ottinger and Conservative James Buckley. Due to the split of the liberal vote, Buckley prevailed. As of 2019, this is the last a candidate who was not a Democrat or Republican was elected to the United States Senate from New York, and the last time the Democrats did not win the states Class 1 Senate seat. This was the last time a member of a third party was elected to the senate until 2006.
