Golf at the 1900 Summer Olympics

The 1900 Summer Olympics took place in Paris, France, and was the first time ever that golf debuted in the Olympics. Two golf events were contested, individual events for men and women. As with most other events in the 1900 Olympics, few, if any, of the competitors had any idea that they were competing in an Olympic Games.

Golf at the 1904 Summer Olympics

At the 1904 Summer Olympics, two golf events were contested – mens individual and team tournaments. The competitions were held from September 17, 1904 to September 24, 1904. It was the second and final appearance of the sport at the Olympics until the 2016 Summer Olympics. The mens individual event was switched to a match play tournament rather than the stroke play used four years earlier.

Golf at the 2016 Summer Olympics

Golf at the 2016 Summer Olympics in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, was held in August at the new Olympic Golf Course, built within the Reserva de Marapendi in the Barra da Tijuca zone. The 2016 Summer Olympics was the first time golf had been played at the Olympics since the 1904 Summer Olympics and featured two events: the mens and womens individual events.

Each National Olympic Committee NOC can enter a team of 2 athletes of 1 male and 1 female. As hosts, Argentina was given a team to compete and a further 5 teams of 2 athletes was decided by the Tripartite Commission. The remaining 26 teams were decided by adding the ranking place of the top ranked eligible male and female golfers on the World Amateur Golf Rankings released on 25 July 2018. Golf was contested at the 2011 Summer Universiade from 17–20 August at the Mission Hills Golf Club in Shenzhen, China. Mens and womens individual and team events were held.

Golf in Russia

Golf in Russia is not yet widespread, not only because of adverse natural conditions, but also because the construction of golf courses requires large capital investments. The first 18-hole golf course was built in the suburban area of Nakhabino in 1994, and remained the only one in the country for many years.

Golf was featured in the Summer Olympic Games official programme in 1900 and 1904. At the IOC session in Copenhagen in October 2009, the IOC decided to reinstate this event for the 2016 Summer Olympics.

As of the 2016 Olympics, qualification is based primarily upon the Official World Golf Ranking Men and Womens World Golf Rankings, with the top fifteen of each gender automatically qualifying with a limit of four per country, and then the highest ranked players from countries that had not yet already qualified two players.

A mens individual tournament was planned for the 1908 London Games, but an internal dispute amongst British golfers lead to them boycotting the event, leaving 1904 gold medallist George Lyon as the only competitor. Offered the gold medal by default, Lyon refused to accept it.

22 golfers competed in 1900. The 1904 tournament featured 77 golfers. Albert Lambert was the only golfer who competed both times; a total of 93 different golfers competed throughout the brief history of Olympic golf before it was brought back in 2016.
