Lærdal is a municipality in Vestland county, Norway. It is located on the south side of the Sognefjorden in the traditional district of Sogn. The administrative center of the municipality is the village of Lærdalsoyri. The old Filefjell Kongevegen road passes through Lærdal on its way to Valdres and later to Oslo.

At 1.342 518 square kilometers square miles municipality is the largest of the 71st area of 356 municipalities in Norway with more than half of this area consisting of mountains. Lærdal is 315го most populous municipality in Norway with a population of 2.151. Municipalitys population density 1.7 people per square kilometer 4.4 / square miles, and its population has decreased by 2.2% over the last decade.

In the valley of Lærdal is long, running from Hemsedal mountains Hogeloft Mickey and the mountains in the East to the Sognefjord in the West. About half of urban residents live in the main village Lærdalsoyri, the rest in small villages in the surrounding valleys, such as Borgund, Ljosne, Tonjum, Erdal, Vindedalen, Fronningen, and Strendene. The old village Lærdalsoyri has 161 protected buildings. Some of the houses there date back to the mid 18th century. In the night from 18-19 January 2014, a massive fire destroyed at least 30 buildings.
