Sleuth (1972 film)

Sleuth is a 1972 British-American mystery thriller film directed by Joseph L. Mankiewicz and starring Laurence Olivier and Michael Caine. The screenplay by playwright Anthony Shaffer was based on his 1970 Tony Award-winning play. Both Olivier and Caine were nominated for Academy Awards for their performances. This was Mankiewiczs final film. Critics gave the film overwhelmingly positive reviews, and would later note similarities between it and Caines 1982 film Deathtrap.

The Visitors (1972 film)

The Visitors is a 1972 American drama film directed by Elia Kazan and starring Patrick McVey. It was entered into the 1972 Cannes Film Festival. Kazan used an article written by Daniel Lang for The New Yorker in 1969, and Langs subsequent book Casualties of War, as a jumping-off point for this film.

The Dawns Here Are Quiet

The Dawns Here Are Quiet is a 1972 Soviet war drama directed by Stanislav Rostotsky based on Boris Vasilyevs novel of the same name. The film deals with antiwar themes and focuses on a garrison of Russian female soldiers in World War II. It was nominated for an Oscar in the Best Foreign Language Film category. The film is set in Karelia and was filmed near Ruskeala.

Alice's Adventures in Wonderland (1972 film)

Alices Adventures in Wonderland is a 1972 British musical film based on the Lewis Carroll novel of the same name and its sequel, Through the Looking-Glass, directed by Australian television producer-director William Sterling. It had a distinguished ensemble cast with a musical score by John Barry and lyrics, Don Black. In 1973, the film won the BAFTA Film Award at the BAFTA Awards Ceremony for Best Cinematography, won by Geoffrey Unsworth, and Best Costume Design, won by Anthony Mendleson. The Master and Margaret (1972 film)

The Master and Margaret, is a 1972 Italian-Yugoslav film directed by Aleksandar Petrovic, loosely based on Mikhail Bulgakovs 1940 novel The Master and Margarita, although it mainly focuses on the parts of the novel set in 1920s Moscow. It won the Big Golden Arena for Best Film, with Bata Zivojinovic picking up the Golden Arena for Best Actor at the 1972 Pula Film Festival, and was selected as the Yugoslav entry for the Best Foreign Language Film at the 45th Academy Awards, but was not accepted as a nominee.
