28S ribosomal protein S18a, mitochondrial is a protein that in humans is encoded by the MRPS18A gene.

Mitochondrial ribosomal protein of mammals is encoded by nuclear genes and help in protein synthesis in the mitochondria. Mitoribosomes mitochondrial ribosomes consist of a Small 28S subunit and a large 39S subunit. They have about 75% protein to rRNA composition compared to prokaryotic ribosomes, where this ratio is reversed. Another difference between mammalian mitoribosomes and prokaryotic ribosomes is that the latter contain a 5s rRNA. Among the different types of proteins in the mitoribosome differ greatly from each other in sequence, and sometimes in biochemical properties, which prevents easy recognition of the homology sequence. This gene encodes a protein that belongs to the 28S subunit of the ribosomal protein S18P family. The encoded protein is one of the three that has a significant similarity of the sequences of bacterial proteins S18. The primary sequences of the three mitochondrial human proteins S18 not more closely related to each other than they are prokaryotic S18 proteins.
