ⓘ Malafon

Malafon was a French ship-launched anti-submarine missile system. Developed in the 1950s and 1960s, the weapon was intended to take advantage of the greater detection ranges possible with towed sonar arrays. The missile entered service in 1966 and was manufactured by Groupe Latecoere

The weapon is essentially a glider-delivered version of the L4 torpedo. Launcher is a circular holder, which allows the weapon rotated to the correct bearing, whereupon it is fired at a fixed elevation of 15°. Two solid rockets to overclock it to 830 km / h within 4 seconds to retreat. The glider remains at a height of 100 meters, change course in flight under Radio control of the launch platform. Effective firing range was only 13 km and it reaches the goal, the glider falls on the torpedo that swims in the sea and starts a circular search pattern. Range Malafon meant that he was, that the water is 800 m from the location of submarines. At the L4 torpedo had a speed of 30 kt in the range of 5 km.

In Malafon was a great weapon, with each missile weight 1.330 kg. as a result, it has only been used on large vessels. It is usually used for medium and long-range goals the submarine, although it could be used against surface ships.

This system was never used in the war. It was deprecated in 1997. He was replaced by helicopters Westland lynx using the mark 46 torpedoes.
