ⓘ VNN1

Pantetheinase is an enzyme that in humans is encoded by the VNN1 gene.

This gene product is a member of the Vanin family of proteins which share a large sequence similarity with each other and with biotinidase. The family includes secreted and membrane-associated proteins, some of which were registered for participation in the hematopoietic trafficking. No activity of biotinidase was demonstrated for any Vanin proteins, however, they possess pantetheinase activity, which may play a role in oxidative-stress response. This protein, like its mouse homolog, most likely GPI-anchor molecules to the cell surface. Mouse protein expressed by perivascular stromal cells of the thymus, and also regulates the migration of T cell precursors in the thymus. This gene is located in close proximity and in the same transcriptional orientation as two other Vanin genes on chromosome 6q23-B24.
