Apolipoprotein B mRNA editing enzyme, catalytic polypeptide 1 also known as C->, U-editing enzyme APOBEC-1 is a protein that in humans is encoded by the APOBEC1 gene.

This gene encodes a member of the APOBEC protein family enzyme cytidine of desaminase. The encoded protein forms a multiple-protein editing holoenzyme with APOBEC1 RNA complementation factor A1CF. This holoenzyme is involved in the editing of cytosine in uracil, the C-To-U nucleotide bases in the mRNA of apolipoprotein B and neurofibromin 1.

APOBEC-A1 was associated with the control of cholesterol level, cancer development and inhibition of viral replication. Its function is based on the introduction of a stop codon into the mRNA of apolipoprotein b apob, which changes the metabolism of lipids in the gastrointestinal tract. The editing mechanism is highly specific. A1 base deamination cytosine gives uracil which creates a stop codon in the mRNA.

A1 was associated with both positive and negative health effects. In rodents, it has a wide distribution of tissues, where, as in humans, is expressed only in small intestine.
