Bakersfield is located in southeastern Franklin County, bordered by Lamoille County to the southeast. Vermont Route 108 passes through the center of town, leading north to Enosburg Falls and south to Jeffersonville. Vermont Route 36 leads west from the center of Bakersfield to St. Albans, the Franklin County seat.

According to the census Bureau United States, Bakersfield with a total area of 44.6 square miles 115.6 km 2, of which 44.5 square miles 115.3 km 2 are land and 0.1 square miles 0.3 km 2, or 0.24%, is water. The city is part of watershed facilities, draining into lake Champlain. Cold hollow mountains are in the Eastern part of the city from a high point 3.261 feet 994 meters to the North of the County line and local attractions include ski area.
