The city of Jordan began on November 27, 1853, when Thomas A. Holmes ordered the construction of a sawmill. This establishment gave Jordan its first name, Holmes Mill.

A year after the founding of mills, brother of Thomas William Holmes entered the site and began Platting the village. By 1855, he successfully investigated and recorded his settlement in the town of Jordan after the river Jordan in Palestine. City of Jordan has gained success in 1855 and 1856 with the addition of a post office and several businesses.

In 1860, the neighbouring village of Brentwood was surveyed by S. A. Cooper, N. I. Gardner and W. R. Thomas. Two villages competed to until legislative measures have combined them in the village of Jordan in 1872. Consolidation to help settlement and by 1880, the population grew to 915 with the boom in business in the village. Some of these companies were Breweries, which have become particularly successful until prohibition in 1919 caused a temporary closure.

Jordan was finally incorporated as a city in 1891.
