Coates is a city in the U.S. state of Minnesota located west of the Upper Mississippi River on the exurban fringe in central Dakota County.

US highway 52 connects North to St. Paul, while County road 46 draws the "East–West" in the nearest suburban towns. The population of 161 at the 2010 census. It is named in honor of civil war captain Henry C. Coates who served in the 1st Minnesota Volunteer infantry.

Major employers are in trucking, moving and recycling services. The town is popular with two Citians for home Coates, burgers since 1962. Saint Agathas Catholic Church serves as city hall.

Originally a rural post office hub in the 1900s years, the U.S. postal service now calls are considered as part of nearby larger Rosemount.
