A post office called Gonvick has been in operation since 1900. The city was named for Martin O. Gonvick, a pioneer settler and native of Norway.

Children in this area go to Clearbrook-Gonvick school, which is located in Clearbrook, mn, which is a 5 minute drive from the hotel. The city of Gonvick was a school that was being converted to living space in the heart of Clearwater, it now includes buy and sell, a florist, and a bunch of classes for various activities. In Clearbrook hornets and bulldogs unite Gonvick school in 1992 as Clearbrook-Gonvick bears. Each of them kept their separate schools, mixed sports until 2004, when a new school was finally built to accommodate the children.
