ⓘ Cystathionine gamma-lyase

Cystathionine gamma-lyase is an enzyme which breaks down cystathionine into cysteine, α-ketobutyrate, and ammonia. Pyridoxal phosphate is a prosthetic group of this enzyme.

Gamma-Lyase Cystathionine also catalyzes the following reactions of elimination:

  • L-cysteine producing pyruvate, NH 3 and H 2 S.
  • L-homoserine to form H 2 O, NH 3 and 2-oxobutanoate.
  • L-cystine, producing thiocysteine, pyruvate and NH 3.

In some bacteria and mammals, including humans, this enzyme is involved in the production of hydrogen sulfide. Hydrogen sulfide is one of several gases that were recently discovered role in Signaling cells in the body.
