Mapleton was platted in 1857 when the railroad was extended to that point. It was named from its location near the Maple River.

Between 7:20 and 7:30 PM on April 9, 2011, a rated EF3 wedge tornado hit the Western half of Mapleton. Earlier it was reported that 50-60% of the city was damaged or destroyed by the tornado that was 3/4 mile wide. There were no serious injuries. Businesses were damaged, and several homes were destroyed.
